Plastic vibrators, generally used by women as a dildo device, can also be employed by men, e.g. by homosexuals – sometimes with strange results. In a letter to the “British Medical Journal,” June 30, 1974, two writers from London’s St. Bartholomew’s Hospital bring to the attention of readers “a new physical sign”. Within the space of a fortnight two patients were admitted through the accident and emergency department “with a painful vibrating umbilicus”. Both the patients were young homosexuals, aged 19 and 25 years, who were accustomed to using battery operated stimulators or vibrators. What had happened was that the vibrators had been lost into the rectum through the anus, apparently at the moment of orgasm. Apart from the vibrating umbilicus, a cylindrical mass could be felt arising from the pelvis and a gentle hum could be heard. The vibrator was removed from one patient easily enough but the other required a general anaesthetic.
