In a famous Chinese sex manual, the “Art of the Bedchamber”, a Taoist named Tung Hsuan Tzu developed the theories and instructions left behind by earlier sex instructors – such as Lady Purity, Lady Mystery, the Yellow Emperor and Peng Tsu. He begins his work – “Of all human behaviour, intercourse is most sublime …” He discusses thirty positions for sexual intercourse – based on the nine methods of Lady Mystery, though with more variety. The coital positions carry pleasant titles, such as The Cuddling Chat, The Passionate Narration, The Fish Exposes Its Gills, The Unicorn Shows Its Horn. The Silkworms Entwine, The Dragon Swings, etc. In addition to the named positions, he also discusses a further twenty-eight positions, making a grand total of fifty-eight coital possibilities.
